This One Summer
by Mariko Tamaki
This was a great read and it was quick! I flew through This One Summer in about an hour or two. We follow two friends, Rose and Windy who meet up every summer their family comes to their vacation spot. They spend the summer watching horror movies they rent from the local DVD store. They become known at the store and they eavesdrop on the teenager's drama. Especially how infatuated they were with the drama going on and trying to crack the case. Rose and Windy were adorable and I loved their friendship! As well as their reactions to the horror movies, Jaws wasn't their favorite, haha.
Another aspect of this story was the family dynamic surrounding both Rose and Windy. Windy never sees her father and Rose is stuck in her mother's depression due to her miscarriage. We really see how a miscarriage affects everyone in the family and it's heartbreaking. I liked the tie between the miscarriage andpregnancy of the teenage girl, I definitely had suspicions that she would let Rose's mother adopt the baby.
The ending was ambiguous and I liked that! It let me have my own ending. I absolutely loved this and the illustrations were stunning! The whole book has the purple color and I could vividly see what each scene was and the girls! I liked how different Rose and Windy were. Overall, great graphic novel.
