Origin
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
As with any other Jennifer Armentrout book, I was waiting on the edge of my seat and with baited breath for this book to be published. And, can you imagine that even though I pre-ordered it, I'm on vacation and would not be able to crack it open until September. It was killing me. So, when I heard that some Barnes and Noble stores had this on the shelves early, well, I called the one closest to where I was vacationing and I was in luck! They had one copy left and put it under my name! I immediately dragged my 6 year old there and got it, even had him take my picture with the book and post it on Facebook! I'm such a dork.
Is there anything Jennifer Armentrout can't write? I don't think so. And is there anything she can't write well? Well, you can imagine my answer to that. And while I was not as taken with the second and third books in this series as I was with the first, well, this book kicked it right back up a notch. I'm not sure if it was because I was finally getting to see Daemon's POV or if it was because I read Obsession and it threw me head long back into the world of the Luxen and Arum. Whatever it was, this book certainly met my expectations beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Blurb from Goodreads:
Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.
After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.
All Katy can do is survive.
Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?
Together, they can face anything.
But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?
And will they even be together
Once again I am blow away by the cover of this book. This is beyond a doubt my favorite of the series. Forget the fact that I just love Daemon with all my heart, but for him to have his own cover, coming at you like that with so much power and control! I can't help but fall right into it. And the colors are so great, totally different than all those of the other books in this series. It's definitely a stand out for me!
So Katy and Daemon, well, they are still our good old Katy and Daemon.
Katy as determined as ever to be her kick butt self, never wavering on her principals and what she believes in. Knowing that she may never see those she loves again, but not quite accepting that it could truly be real. Hoping with all hope that somehow, some way, things will turn out better than she could ever possibly imagine. And the snarky attitude, well, that's just what makes her that much more lovable and special to me. She was never this love sick, "I've been drawn into a paranormal world and I don't know what to do help me please" type of girl. She jumped in with both feet and took whatever came at her.
But the best part about this book, the best part about Daemon's character, is that we get to finally SEE Daemon for who and what he is. Armentrout gives us his POV and he is laid right out there, emotions and everything that goes behind it, and he shows us what he is really like. Not that we had any doubts, at least I didn't. I knew he loved Katy, despite his snarky attitude and ability to be the most cocky guy on the planet. What I loved most was watching his emotions spew forth, watching as he struggled to put into words how he truly feels about Katy and about his family. Watching and he worries what is happening to Katy and how he can right what he feels he's done to her.
The secondary characters, well, sure they deserve some props. We see some old faces: Luc, still as bizarre as ever, Dee and Dawson still caring for Daemon and not wanting to let him go, Nancy still such a bitch you want to slap her into next Tuesday. But you also see some new faces: namely Archer, not really who or what you think he is and he grows on you immensely and Micah, who you don't get to see much of but I have a feeling will return somehow in the last book.
And the plot, well, you can imagine Daemon is all about saving Katy. And Katy is all about surviving. And how Armentrout goes about it is typical of her past action and adventure we've grown to love. Things explode, people die, there's a lot of aliens lighting up. It's really pretty much non-stop. Oh and don't forget the romance, because if we didn't have the romance, then why would we want to read Katy and Daemon's story. But one thing Armentrout does in this book is she makes it about more than Daemon and Katy, she makes it about humans and Luxen and Arum and Daedalus and now you start to see the bigger picture, the reason why everyone hides themselves away from the world and tries not to be exposed. And we finally get to see and understand just what it is that Daedalus is up to, which had me sitting on the edge of my seat and also wondering why it was we thought they were so bad. That is until things are really thrown out into the open. I am still, however, a bit in the dark and think there is so much more that will be revealed about them before this series comes to a close!
And the ending? Would it be a Lux novel if we were not left with something that totally blows our minds? Um...no, it would not be. So I'll tell you right now be prepared to be left wondering because you will be. But it will be a great ride in the mean time!
And Arementrout's writing style continues to suck me right in. She makes it so easy to love those you should love, hate those you should hate, and wonder about those who could be teetering on either side. She's not afraid to keep you on the edge of your seat, to leave you wondering what will happen next. And, best of all, she's not afraid to show you that sometimes bad things happen to good people and aliens.
You might notice that it took me 4 days to read this book, well, you try being on vacation with three screaming kids who want your attention every two minutes while you are trying to engross yourself in your novel. Not an easy task! I found myself hiding in the bathroom (literally, I do not tell a lie) and hoping they were ok in the pool (ok so that's a bit of a lie, their lives certainly come before Daemon and Katy, although I can say it was a tough call!).
So grab this book, sit back and close yourself in your own world for a few hours because once you start this book, you are not going to want to put it down until you get to the end.
