The Girl Who Played With Fire
by Stieg Larsson
I enjoyed this book and the story is so original and engaging. But for me it had to be capped at 3* because the language was awful. Larsson uses the word 'dyke' repeatedly and as a gay woman it passed the point of criticism into the downright offensive.
As a whole, the novel is fantastic at challenging norms and stereotypes. We see powerful women, complex relationships and a casual approach to sex and sexuality. It was just the repeated use of 'bad' language and harmful slurs that really bothered me towards the end.
I do love the story, Lisbeth is fantastic and such an intriguing character. The whole story is dark and, just like Blomkvist, I desperately want to delve deeper and expose all those breaking the law and abusing their power.
