3.5 stars. I wasn't sure what exactly this would be about. Or more I wasn't sure what sub genre this book would fall into. For the most part this is a hard hitting contemporary heavily leaning into the literary fiction category. But because of the gods in Ada's head whose perspective we see most of her life in this story, there's some magical realism. What makes this book unique and interesting are the perspectives its told from. Both the narrators voices being gods that inhabit Ada's body, and the fact that Ada is a Nigerian born woman who grows up with what could be described as mental health issues. Underlying that is a story that is all too familiar and not the happiest. So I can't really say I enjoyed this. I learned from it and I am impressed the storytelling talent. And I am somewhat content with how things are looking up for Ada in the end for lack of a better way to put it. A happily ever after ending where Ada is "cured" or "fixed" would spit in the face of everything written before. And it would be unrealistic. So I liked this but I didn't love it.
