Buried Deep and Other Stories
by Naomi Novik
I enjoy reading short stories, but it is sadly the case with almost every anthology I pick up that I end up genuinely enjoying no more than than half of the collection (and in some cases far fewer). Buried Deep unfortunately isn't the exception, but there were some stories I really adored, and even the ones I liked the least were objectively well written.
My favourite was by far and away Dragons & Decorum, which I rated 4.75 stars and considered giving 5. Naomi Novik is well known for her involvement in the fanfiction community so it's not a surprise to me that she handles this Pride and Prejudice/Temeraire crossover so well, choosing elements of Austen's story and characters to include while also making them her own. Elizabeth Bennet feels entirely appropriate in Novik's dragon-filled version of 19th century England.
Other highlights for me, at 4 stars each, were Buried Deep and Blessings. Several stories came in just below at 3.75 stars, including two set in the worlds of the Scholomance and Temeraire (albeit the latter was in Ancient Rome). Both were enjoyable but not especially memorable.
Overall I enjoyed this collection (with the caveat mentioned above!) and would recommend it.
