What are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman's Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal
by Laina Dawes, Skin
Before I heard that Rhianna is a fan of Slipknot, I had never considered metal/rock and black women. So after googling black women in metal bands I learned about Straight Line Stitch, one of the bands mentioned in this book and whose music is worth checking out. Laina Dawes does a good job of explaining the racism and sexism in the metal and punk scenes and taking up space in a mostly white environment. One of the only issues I had while reading this is the typos. Hopefully this book gets republished someday and someone proofreads it.
