Dear Emmie Blue
by Lia Louis
Okay, update: THIS is now my favorite book of the month so far and should also be a movie! This book is so complicated and moving and just SO GOOD. I had seen it and wondered about it but hadn't decided, then a friend read it earlier in the month and liked it so I decided to go for it. Emmie has never felt loved or part of a family. She never knew her dad and her mom is flakey and bails her to travel around th English countryside as a fortune teller, so after she experiences a sexual assault by someone who was supposed to be a trusted adult in her life at 16, she sends a letter expressing her need for a friend attached to a balloon out into the universe. It is found in France by a boy named Lucas who has the same birthday as her. They become best friends and years later she loves him but he shocks her by asking her to be his best woman when he marries the ex-girlfriend he didn't tell her he was back together with. I won't say anything else because it is just so good and I don't want to give anything away!
