The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
4.0

3.5? 3.75? 4? I really enjoyed this but I didn't love it nearly as much as I thought it would. It definitely had it's flaws.

Some things seemed to be tossed in place, some things dragged out longer than expected, there weren't enough seeds planted for the romance...it seemed to just happen (to be fair, they knew each other for 8 years-- we just didn't get much inclination that they liked each other in that way until they were in love and couldn't keep hands off each other), and even the final plot twist still confused me. Like, wtf?
I appreciate the whole idea that every legend from each part of the world had it wrong in one part of the tale or another. That was great. The execution of that and the final twist was...just muddy and confusing to me.

I mainly only liked one viewpoint. Ead the other viewpoints we didn't get enough to love. I wanted to live Tane and niclays and everyone but they got less page time and I found their viewpoints, character arc and development less intriguing. I couldn't care less about Tane becoming a dragon rider or the Eastern dragons at all. They were inconsequential for the first 700 pages.

So my rating is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.
