I'm not sure why I just completely did not enjoy this story. I love a tragedy! Something about this one just didn't make me feel the catharsis that can come with a tragic story. Esmeralda was a silly girl who lived a hard life and fell in love with a man she dreamed could love her but was just an airhead. I know it's a common theme in classics or older literature in general, but the continual reminder that keeping chaste is the only way she can expect the spell to find her family again to work was just really annoying.

Quasimodo didn't even feel like he had a personality, so on top of being an outcast he didn't even seem humanized by his own storylines. As stated, Phoebus was a total airhead. Gringoire made for comic relief, I suppose.

Claude Frollo was a hella creep and a great villain. But a lot of me knows that a lot of his sin was still based on Esmeralda's ...existence. It just gave off too much "he couldn't help but sin when he saw her" without enough of blaming Frollo for being a major creep. I know that's also of the times, but it was just a bit much for me. His death was extremely satisfying.
