It's graphic novel series like these that elevate the genre to something more than "comic books". This series is provocative, intriguing, intelligent and interesting. The characters are believable and realistic, and the plot moves at an appropriate pace.

To me, what made this novel interesting were the facts and discussion around women's issues. In this world, there's only one man left. A plague or something was released and every mammal with a Y chromosome instantly died. This is a very delicate issue- a world with only one man, so how can the women survive? It could come across as patronizing or insulting, but to me it didn't. It clearly shows the lack of equality in gender roles in employment, religion, and the sciences. It doesn't say that women COULDN'T do tasks that men were doing, but rather, that they weren't given the same opportunities to do them. It really highlights the gender inequality.

I highly recommend this series. The art is gorgeous and the issues that it addresses are very relevant to today's time, and sadly, these issues don't feel as if they will go away anytime soon. The book isn't proselytizing, but it does bring home its point. To me, this is series is brilliant and it's worth getting into.
