The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

adventurous hopeful mysterious medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? No

4.25

things i loved:
  • folktale and storybook aspect
  • smooth interweaving of multiple connected narratives
  • the moon and the innkeeper
  • eleanor and simon
  • the writing style
  • the descriptions (very cinematic at times in a way i quite enjoyed)
  • the starless sea and its harbors as places
  • the complex recurring themes and motifs
  • being lost in time
  • just some really cool concepts in general
  • twas recommended by a friend

things i was a bit disappointed by:
  • dorian and zachary's romance  feeling so lackluster and rushed
  • mirabel's characterization felt inconsistent to me and i get that was somewhat purposeful but she felt more like a plot device than a character at times
  • in general i think the characters were at times a bit flat
  • pacing was sometimes odd, kinda feel like this may have worked better as a trilogy of shorter books or something rather than a single large novel
