Tender Beasts
by Liselle Sambury
Genuinely not very enjoyable to read.
- Being in the main character's head was not fun. I found her, Sunny, insufferable and felt there was very little development in her personality despite what was going on to and around her. From the second we're introduced to her I didn't really like who she was and who she represented in the family but I assumed she would get better. She didn't.
- I was SICK of reading shit like "omg I forgot to check my privilege again." like we get it sister. You're rich. You don't have to worry about much. Your "friends" aren't and remind you of this often. I didn't need to read about it every few chapters. I got the gist immediately.
- I liked that the author gave us a wealthy black family as we don't get to see that very often, but all the commentary (lukewarm, nonetheless) was so repetitive and unnecessary to me.
- None of the twists or plot points that were unlocked during the duration of this novel were interesting to me. This was especially true when I became fatigued with our main character.
- The cover has very little to do with the plot of the book which is unfortunate in my opinion. I really enjoy this cover and thought the book would have some more horror elements to it. It's more like a murder-mystery than a horror novel to me.
