The Screaming Staircase
by Jonathan Stroud
I read this book after loving the Lockwood & Co TV show so much I binged the entire series in two days. I'm delighted to say that the book is every bit as good, and that the TV show actually follows the book very closely. It's well written, imaginative and has great worldbuilding as well as some tense horror scenes. I really like the characters.
It does surprise me that the books are marketed as middle grade because it reads to me as far more appealing to teenagers than 9 year olds. It arguably fills that middle ground between middle grade and young adult.
I do have to question the cover for this UK edition - why is Anthony Lockwood featured, but not Lucy Carlyle? The book is written in first person from her perspective, not his. It's not a good choice to opt for a male character over the female lead.
I loved this book, and will absolutely be continuing the series. I also highly recommend the audiobook.
