House of Earth and Blood
by Sarah J. Maas
This should have been two books. It was really too long. The pacing was all over the place. While I appreciated the slow burn of the romance, there were several plots drawn out in this which did not need to be. I don't know if just used to urban fantasies building up over several books or not but this could have been written better for timing, pacing and plot set up. There are some big conveniences in here. Plus, it's weird how the author picks and chooses how much detail to give. I don't dislike this but just feel it could have been better.
Also, given the title of the book and the series title I can guess that future books will follow different characters. I do like both of the main characters but the way they were viewed by others had very flimsy set up. I also love the relationship between Bryce and various secondary characters. Its the relationships that really shine in this. But I have to admit that I'm rooting for the humans.
