The Shadow of the Gods
by John Gwynne
Welcome to the harsh world of Vigrid, where monstrous mountains stretch to the horizon, where life is though and where leaves are crisping below your feet from the blazing cold. In this world danger is everywhere in the form of mythical creatures that will steel your teeth, worms that will suffocate you by crawling in your mouth and nose or axes searing trough the sky from warriors in search of battle fame or vengeance.
In this epic fantasy we follow three ‘warriors’ with different storylines. A farmer Orka, slave Varg and a noblewoman Elvar. Once Gods ruled, but since the battle of Gods and their extinction there’s nothing of them left except bones and shadow. While queens and jarls fight for land, murders are taking place and children are disappearing without a trace of the perpetrators. Each of the characters are suddenly involved in discovering this mystery.
I read this book in a lovely buddy read and I was completely blown away by this action packed, thrilling and on occasion extremely bloody and brutal epic fantasy. It took some effort getting in to it from lack of a glossary, but it’s narrative was sublime and pulled me right in. The world building is complex and outstanding crafted and the characters are so well sculpted that they are very likable. I fell in love with this world, the characters and the mythical creatures and now it is a new favorite of mine. I highly recommend it! Be warned. This book has explicit content and is sometimes very bloody and gruesome. I cant wait for part 2!
