I have very mixed thoughts about Mickey 7. There were some things I really liked, including a chatty first person writing style reminiscent of John Scalzi or Andy Weir; some interesting philosophical questions about whether a clone with the memories a person who has died is in fact also that person; and tantalising glimpses at an alien species.
Unfortunately the alien plotline is underdeveloped (possibly being saved for the sequel?). There are a lot of flashbacks to previous Mickeys as well as explanations of historical events, which in themselves could be quite interesting but they take up too high a percentage of the book and the present day storyline feels too short and underwhelming in comparison. I also didn't find any of the character relationships particularly compelling.
Overall I'm glad I read this and I suspect the forthcoming movie release may be worth a watch, but it's not a book I'm likely to ever reread and l have yet to decide whether to read the sequel.
