Beartown
by Fredrik Backman
Well - that was super hard hitting! I'd noticed this as a series on HBO (foreign, I'm not at all opposed to subtitles, just hadn't gotten around to watching, and the book is always better, right?) Ironically, Hubs and I had just started watching the Hulu docuseries "Welcome to Wrexham" and this had some similarities at the start. A small town, revolving around a sport (ice hockey here, soccer in the Wrexham series). The hope that the team doing well might revitalize the town, the town being completely obsessed with the sport/team.
Then, this changed from a sports theme, to much more heavy stuff (although still sports, and the idolization of the players, perceptions, etc). Trigger warnings for rape. Not super explicit, but very heavy. I can only imagine some of the feelings this could bring up for someone who has been in this sad situation. So many thoughts, of how you might react were you some of the different people, with the different perspectives and biases.
Tough read, but very good. Makes you think. Good book club fodder I'm sure. I checked out this reading guide, and it did have some good questions, things to ponder. https://www.readinggroupguides.com/reviews/beartown/guide
