A Springtide Meeting by Emily Murdoch
3.0

There's a good deal I enjoyed about this book. The two main characters were truly enjoyable and the setting was pleasantly different. Surprising actually as it was something away from London. Weymouth was actually a location I didn't know about being a popular tourist/destination resort for the ton to escape London, and I do enjoy reads that teach me knew historical information given my love of devouring historical research. However, a small downside to me loving historical research is the bit about the corsets being worn so tight women were fainting, and suggesting this was due to French fashions being popular, made me cringe.

Much of my research into 18th century France and England has shown that corsets weren't worn really tight, or especially as tight as this implies or we have been led to believe for a good while, as 18th century stays tended to be more forgiving/loose. Plus styles were starting to transition to directoire/regency fashion which were more loose and fluid. Much later they did get quite tight and restrictive, but this wasn't specifically due to anything to do with the French.

That aside, this was a sweet and adorable romance. I was able to overlook that bit for this reason as the chemistry between the two characters was perfect, and I did read the book in a span of like 2+ hours. My biggest issue though was the time frame, and the fact that nothing really happened. We know that Cordelia is supposed to be there for a fortnight, but everything happens over 4 days - even the big dramatic moment wasn't that dramatic as it's all forgiven too quickly. When they meet the father, you expect more given everything we learn of Cordelia and why she's there(though some stuff still is never cleared up), but there's hardly anything in terms of a reaction. Then suddenly the book has ended. We learn quite little about Walsingham himself besides he's a really young doctor and lives in Weymouth. We also don't ever learn why Cordelia is overwhelmingly suspicious and terrified of men - her reactions at time seem to imply something deep except nothing's revealed.

Really this book was over just as really could've started and that ultimately led me to feel disappointed. As I said, it was an enjoyable and sweet romance if all you want is just that, but otherwise nothing terribly memorable. It's not a book that I could see myself re-reading down the line.
