myntop 's review for:
I needed a "light and fluffy" read after a couple of heavy reads back to back, so I picked The Boyfriend List. I had read We Were Liars by the same author and enjoyed it. One of the best things about this book, is that while it seems (from the title) to be all about boys, it's really about how Ruby discovers her own voice.
Ruby, through therapy and her "boyfriend list" discovers that she lies. Not on purpose or in a cruel way, but mostly to herself and about what bothers her or doesn't. She needs to figure this out to help navigate her current social situation. She also learns that she doesn't speak up for herself enough.
A very difficult lesson, that often needs to be relearned even in adulthood, is to be aware of who your true friends are. Some people are only true to you so long as they have need of you, or as long as you fit into the mold they want you in. Sometimes, you outgrow a friendship without realizing you have. Sometimes, people who have been your friend for a long time change and are not friendly any longer. It's tough, but it's life.
The book ends quite nicely, I think, but there are more in the series, so I will definitely be checking them out at some point.
