The Hunger
by Alma Katsu
I was so looking forward to this, after learning about The Donner Party in my history class I was hooked on this tale of absolute tragedy and horror.
There was always something so taboo about succumbing to cannibalism and so to see it recreated in a fiction sense where taking liberties is a given, I found myself disappointed.
The book was too slow. I understand we have to follow the party's journey from the beginning to what lead them to cannibalism, but if you're adding supernatural elements, you're not rocking the boat any more by integrating the supernatural in the beginning.
Instead the middle of the book introduces this uneasiness of something else among them and it's only fully addressed at the end of the book which was highly disappointing.
Also putting romantic notions in there that sort of came from nowhere and didn't really compliment the plot was a little irritating to read.
I'm not even going to go in depth with how disappointing the ending is, but I actually almost cried as I realised it was over and basically nothing had happened.
Other than that, it was enjoyable, it kept me interested and it was and easy read but it could have been so much more!
