Legendborn
by Tracy Deonn
I'm low-key kicking my own behind for waiting so long to read this book! I’m so happy I got the audio to read along with the physical copy!
Legendborn doesn’t just tell a story — it reclaims one.
From the first page, you're sucked into a fierce, beautiful reimagining of Arthurian legend through Bree’s eyes — a brilliant, grieving Black girl fighting for more than herself.
I'm not even going to front, I struggled early on — truthfully it was Bree’s first ancestral walk with Patricia that truly stole my heart!
The way Rootwork is woven into the story — deep, tender, full of generational power — is breathtaking. Bree’s magic isn’t just about spells or bloodlines; it’s about honoring the grief and strength of those who came before her. And that made every moment after hit even harder for me. The way it's uplifted instead of demonized, chef's kiss!
The world Deonn builds feels rich, real, and inclusive at its core.
Queer and trans characters aren’t just present — they matter. Greer, William, Alice — each one made Bree’s journey feel even bigger, even brighter.
And somehow, in the middle of all the monsters, magic, and rebellion, there’s also a love triangle that actually made me care. (Still #TeamBree — her happiness is what matters most!)
At its heart, Legendborn is a story about loss, love, and rising up anyway.
It’s about rooting yourself in who you are — and in who came before you.
I can’t recommend it enough.
