A Spindle Splintered
by Alix E. Harrow
I hope you find your happily ever after, or whatever.
Already did. I'm just looking for a better once upon a time.
I had a feeling I'd love this novella right from the dedication page, in which Harrow writes: "for everyone who deserves a better story than the one they have." This perfectly captures the message at the heart of A Spindle Splintered, that the cards you're dealt in life don't have to be a life sentence - you can take control of your own narrative & choose your own destiny. This really, really resonated with me. I'm typically intimidated by fantasy, but this was very accessible to someone who doesn't dive into the genre all that often - it's basically Sleeping Beauty meets Enchanted, but they curse & there's a sapphic love story, pure perfection. I really enjoyed getting some background on the actual sleeping beauty fairytale, & I thought the way Harrow incorporated different versions of sleeping beauty into the story was so genius. Zinnia, Charm, & Primrose have my heart & I can't wait to see where they go next within this series, this set everything up perfectly for a second story. & the physical book is just stunning, it truly feels like you're reading a fairytale for grownups!
This was seriously amazing, a quick, magical story that'll help you escape reality for a little bit - highly, highly recommend!
