Blue-Skinned Gods

emotional

I don't think I was expecting this one to be quite so sad. It's the story of Kalki, a young boy raised as a God on an ashram in India, trying to figure out who he is beyond the figure everyone worships. The novel has two very distinct halves, one in India one in the US and while I did prefer the first half, the second is just as rich - and just as sad. Really it's just a story of one young man being exploited by everyone he meets.
I liked how the author wove in lots of different types of folks into the background as just the norm, as well as the not-often-talked about aspects of Hindu theology/mythology that embrace gender-queerness. But I did notice one character introduced themselves as she/they, and other characters would occasionally refer to them as 'them', but Kalki never ever does, only ever she. Not sure if that was intentional or not!
