The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

The Dream Thieves is the second book in The Raven Cycle series. We follow Blue, Ronan, Gansey, Noah and Adam after the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken.

The Raven Boys review

I had the same “issue” with this book as I had with the first and will probably have with the entire series. The story just doesn’t grab me. I can read a few pages, listen to a chapter and completely forget about the story for a few weeks before continuing.

We follow the other characters more than only Blue, like in the first book. Their character arcs were more developed and I enjoyed reading/listening to more than just Blue, since I still feel a bit detached from her. I enjoyed Ronan the most by a mile! His story and character developed so much and it was never not interesting.

The plot and story thicken from the first book. It develops and the paranormal aspect was more on the front page than in the first book. It also delves more into the fantasy aspect with the dreaming. Whereas I felt the first book was laying down the background, this book felt more complete in its story, characters and development. On the other hand, so much is happening at the same time that I sometimes struggle to keep a clear picture and wouldn’t really be able to tell someone what the story is about. The main plot point, finding Glendower, had zero progression this whole book. So, while on one hand the story feels more developed, in the overall plot is really is like a filler book.

Overall, I enjoyed The Dream Thieves more than The Raven Boys. One thing I like is the unpredictability of this story. It can go a million ways and it makes me curious to see what happens next.
