bahareads 's review for:
The Search, Part 2
by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Gene Luen Yang
Note: review to cover all three volumes.
The Search finally gives us what all ATLA fans have been dying to know. When I realized that we would finally be about to know I was so ecstatic! I mean finally learning about the dark, shadowy mystery that is Ursa.
"Finding a clue at last, Zuko enlists the aid of Team Avatar—and the most unlikely ally of all.." as we have Azula plastered on the cover, I mean spoiler alert!
PART ONE:
Does Fire Lord Azulon think breeding with Avatar Ruko's line is going to make his descendants stronger or something? (Also I just realized that Azula and Zuko are basically named after their grandfather.) Would denying Ozai's proposal cause the family disgrace? Or would she just have been forced to anyways? Also why could Ursa never contact her family again? Because they're from peasant stock or just to be cruel?
I love to see Zuko evolving and changing his views on way things are done. I love that he reaches out to Azula, even though she doesn't deserve it. Viewing Azula in her maddened state is one of the best things about this series. We see her fight back and forth in her twisted mind about her mother, she hears her mother talking to her etc. It almost seems like Azula always thought that her mother thought the worst of her mother.
I'm glad that we're connecting with the spirit world in this series, I didn't particularly like LOK take on the spirit world, but this I enjoyed. The wolf spirit really freaked me out. I also found the word "sweetie" obnoxious, like come up with another nickname. But my favorite ship Aang and Katara is sailing on a great big ocean.
The ending had me rolling around, I couldn't believe it! (I also couldn't believe that Azula would let her guard down, even while she was sleeping.)
PART TWO:
I like how they highlight how far Ozai will go to control people. Ursa being surprised about Ozai's brutality is unlikely, I'm sure that Ozai has shown it time and time again. Ozai using his own children as hostages is sickening, he doesn't care a bit about his own flesh and blood.
Why wouldn't Zuko replaced the letter in Azula's boot, you know she has mental problems so why provoke her? Also it seems unlikely that Aang wouldn't support Zuko's mission all the way to the end. I loved how we went from present day to past flashbacks, it brought the whole story together.
Once again I love the interaction with the spirit world, a spirit with the power to give faces is the mother of a spirit that takes them away is brilliant! I would relish a book about stories of the spirit world, I want to know more about The Mother of Faces story.
PART THREE:
It's great that Ursa & Ikem have a chance at real love again. It's interesting to think that Zuko has another sister, but the story smooths over that with the bigger revelation of Zuko's mother. I wonder how she reacted to her mom's old/new face.
It's sad to see Azula still fighting within herself, even to the end. I would love a short manga centered on Azula. I'm in tears with Zuko and Azula, I would like to see them reconcile. Reading about Zuko finally accepting himself, his role, is tear-jerking.
Seeing Zuko walking off in the sunset with Ursa was wonderful, best ending ever.
