caketinz 's review for:
The Horizon, Vol. 3
by Jung Ji-Hoon
When I first read volume 1 a couple of years ago I was so not keen on its depressing story I put off reading the last couple volumes of the series when they came out. Until now cause I'm trying to read as much of my Ize Press volumes for this month.
In general depressing stories like these aren't my kind of thing. I find it way too easy for them to effect me emotionally to a point I desperately want to avoid them. But what bothers me more is an unknown ending 🤣
While the depressing elements don't stop and in fact ramp up I do thiiiink? it was a slightly satisfying ending. The boy finding some purpose and joy and love in life albeit at the very end of his life was nice at least. There was a moment where I thought it was just going to keep being sad all the way to the ending.
I have mixed opinions on the art style. Overall its just not my kind of thing. I was struggling to tell what was happening more than I would like though honestly I think that was likely the point 😅
There were some really interesting uses of pages to not necessarily convey emotions of the characters or what was going on in their head. So I do praise the series for that especially in the final volume. Overall though I'm not a massive fan.
Once I finished reading I went and read a load of other reviews of the series online as a lot of people around me absolutely loved it and I do think reading other peoples reviews I understand why others do enjoy it. Though enjoy might not be the right word. Felt it was a good read? It is absolutely a poignant read and if you enjoy that sort of thing I would probably still recommend it to you. For me personally it is not the sort of read I enjoyed so I rated it lowly. It did feel at times that the point was just to make you feel more and more depressed/sad while reading it. I had to big myself up to be in a good mood before coming back to finish the last couple volumes.
A final personal peeve of mine is the series left a LOT up for the reader to interpret. There are a lot of questions that are just never answered which again is not my kind of thing. I like seeing reasons and answers to why things are happening. But if you like open ended stories again this might be for you.
