Bound by Duty
by Cora Reilly
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Well... I was not expecting that much angst omfg.
I honestly didn't like Valentina's character that much, which is surprising because everyone seems to love her? I found her to be quite irritating at times. I did admire that she went against the traditional roles that women are expected to conform to in this culture. I liked that she worked, and she's very persistent. But there wasn't anything really interesting about her character?
Dante, ngl... he's a bit of a coward. I felt for him, and really empathised with his struggle of moving on from his dead wife. But the way he treated Valentina was actually quite cruel. There was no substance to his character. He was just this emotionless, widower mafia boss. That's his character. We learn absolutely nothing else about him.
I've found that Cora Reilly's books are quite short, which makes it extremely difficult to have characters that feel relatable, or like real people. Also, because her books are quite short, the relationships tend to flower from nowhere. We don't really see the relationships grow and expand. The characters seem to just have sex a couple of times, and then fall in love. I guess if you're looking for a really quick and fun romance series to binge, then perhaps you'll enjoy this. But be aware that there are definitely quite a few flaws.
