queerbooksupremacy 's review for:
A Tempest of Emerald Dream
by William J. Wood
adventurous
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
A mix
Strong character development:
No
Loveable characters:
No
Diverse cast of characters:
Complicated
pros:
ace protagonist, mlm side characters, sapphic side character, non-binary side character
short chapters
reads very quickly
cons:
bury your gays trope (the only named non-binary character as well was killed, technically, before the book even started, what??)
no worldbuilding, like at all
no development on characters, relationships or the world itself
no plot- or a flimsy, boring one at best
‘chosen one discovers they have powers and are destined to fight a great evil’ - original 🙄
the writing had a ton of editing mistakes all through out- from spelling, to grammar to sentences repeating- if there had been one extra level of editing maybe it would have been enjoyable on some level
this put me in such a slump and should’ve only taken a few hours to read but i struggled because of how unenjoyable this is. there are no memorable scenes, the characters barely interact on an important level and i was just,,, not excited to read this.
after finding this on tiktok i was really excited but unfortunately, it missed the mark by quite a lot.
but even as far as rep went, i didn’t think the ace representation was as good as it could’ve been. the way the protagonist phrased it seemed very closed minded, even when being ace is such a broad spectrum.
overall: yikes.
