I read mostly standalones and am very bad at reviewing books in series without spoiling anything so I’m keeping it brief! Jemisin wraps up this trilogy in such a way that is incredibly satisfying and also an emotional gut punch. My mouth literally dropped open at several points during The Stone Sky when Jemisin revealed some piece of history or lore! It was fascinating to be taken further back in history for this book, learning the origins of the orogenes (try saying that five times fast) and details of The Shattering.
.
I’m constantly in awe at how Jemisin weaves in social commentary that pertains to issues in our world as well as this incredibly complex sci-fi world she’s created. At one point ~some characters~ realise their kind have been being murdered for no discernible reason (trying to be vague). They are devastated obviously, and confused because it seems like no matter how they act, the others will find an issue with it. There’s this simple line: ‘It doesn’t matter what we do. The problem is them.’ Jemisin summed up basically the whole system of racism in two tiny phrases.
.
If you haven’t picked up The Fifth Season yet then you must! You need this trilogy in your life.
