I am so torn about this book. On the one hand, I love it with every fibre of my being. It is beautifully writen, heartfelt and tackles big themes in an appropriate way for its audience.
On the other hand, despite the fact this is a fantasy book, this was not this authors story to tell.
Many countries, like Canada and Australia have awful histories with displacement and horrific treatment of its first people, which include forcible removal and government 'schools' and 'orphanages'. It doesn't always get taught (this is improving, slowly) and history gets told by the (usually white) victor. So having stories told that touch on the horrors and atrocities behind things like assimilation policies, being told by someone that will never understand them, doesn't sit well. Profiting of the pain and trauma of others are never ok.
