This Vicious Grace by Emily Thiede

adventurous funny mysterious medium-paced

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the eARC & audiobook!

It took me a while, the audiobook had to carry me for the first 120 pages, to get into this book but I ended up really enjoying it. Especially, the character dynamics between Alessa and her body guard Dante. Alessa's power reminded me of Juliette's in the Shatter Me series.

On the island of Saverrio, every generation a Finestra is chosen to save the world from the scarabeo, a vicious insect like species that will attack. The Finestra chooses their Fonte and together they train to save Saverrio. Except the current Finestra Alessa accidentally killed her Fonte. Three of them. Now the conspiracies about her grow, and after an assassination attempt, Alessa goes to Dante and asks him to be her bodyguard. He agrees, reluctantly. Will she find a new Fonte and save Saverrio before the scarabeo attack again?

The change in narrator shocked me. I think if I would have read it as a normal book I wouldn't have known the change of POV so immediately. It impacted that specific scene as well, in a good and emotional way.

I also feel that this book could have easily been a standalone. I am not yet sure if I want to read the sequel.

I would recommend This Vicious Grace to those who enjoy bickering romances between a cranky person and an optimistic one as well as the chosen one trope.
