justinlife 's review for:
Invincible: Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1
by Robert Kirkman
I must say this graphic novel surprised me. It took a genre and a story we all know and love and did unique things with it. It takes the readers' knowledge of superhero comics and uses it against them. Kirkman does a brilliant job setting up his universe. He gives the reader something to grab onto- something fun, something interesting. What if Superman married Louis Lane, had a baby, then moved the suburbs? That's how Kirkman frames the story. He then decides to slowly twist it. He takes it to somewhere I didn't expect or see coming. He changes it up, and it truly blew my mind. I want to read the next volume right now, that's how good it was.
I'm not going to say that this is for everyone because it's not. It is smart, doesn't take itself too seriously, and isn't afraid to have some fun at its own expense, but it does start slow. Most beginning tales do, though. The main character is likable enough, but he's not overwhelmingly interesting. I was more fascinated by the world around him than Invincible himself. If you're discovering graphic novels for the first time, this book might not be for you. If you are an old hat, understand the genre, and enjoy it, then I think it's worth a read.
