The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

Wow, this book was good! I'm not sure how else to describe it besides interesting. Basic plotline: two light-skinned Black twin sisters decide to run from their home town. One decides to pass as white, marrying a white man and running off with him. The other one remains to live as a Black woman, eventually moving back home. We, the audience, see their journeys as well as their children's journeys.

The book was well-written, with a very unique voice that I'm not quite used to. It took me a minute to get used to it, but once I did, I did thoroughly enjoy it! I loved reading about the two daughters eventually meeting; the reunion of the sisters was intriguing as well. It wasn't quite what I expected, or at least not what I was hoping for. I was hoping the two sisters would end up becoming friends again, but alas, they did not.

One thing I didn't enjoy about this book was the pacing, though it was such a small deal that I'm only taking away half of a star. It went slowly at times, so slowly that I thought the same little tiny detail was taking up about 6 pages. At other times, it went so quickly as to seem like that portion of the story wasn't that important; I found myself glossing over important details because the writing was going pretty fast. However, this was such a small and tiny thing to me, that I was perfectly alright with it. It took almost nothing away from the book!
