It Had to Be You
by Eliza Jane Brazier
Eliza Jane Brazier is one of my auto-buy authors. I trust her books are always going to take me to a new place in the world with people I’d never get to meet in real life and the story she’s going to tell me is going to be told in a refreshing way. I’m always delighted by her approach to storytelling and her dark, humorous prose.
She’s done it again with It Had to be You, which she said was a book she’s always wanted to write: assassin versus assassin, jet-setting around Europe and falling in love as they try to kill one another. It’s a trope I’ve read more than once and never fail to enjoy. Trust Brazier to bring warmth, wit, atmosphere, emotion, an engaging and comprehensive plot, likeable supporting characters, and some surprisingly touching spice scenes to the game in order to take things up a huge notch from mundane to excellence.
While not my favorite of Brazier’s works, it’s still a terrific book that I’m proud to have on my shelf and totally recommend people read if they're in the mood for something a little off the beaten path from a romantic thriller, a suspense thriller, or a dark rom com. If you made a Venn diagram of those subgenres then you might find It Had to be You in the middle of it all.
