Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel
by Val Emmich
This one took me a while...
I started listening to this as an audiobook on a long coach ride home as I get travel sick quite easily from reading.
However, I have come to the conclusion that I really don't get on with audiobooks! And I think that might have partially impacted my review on the book too.
I've been in love with the soundtrack to this musical for ages now, and am determined to get to see it in theatre eventually, so of course I've been meaning to read this for quite a while.
I wasn't disappointed. It was exactly what I had imagined it being: I related a lot to the characters, the description was beautiful and inspiring, the plot flowed well considering how short a musical is compared to a novel... but, I felt like after the midway point, once the substantial action began, it went from had felt to me like poetry to... well more like a running commentary. By the end I felt worn out and was just pleased to reach the last minute!
Again, I'm not sure if that's down to the writing, or just the length of and effort having to be put into listening to someone else's natural pace as opposed to reading at my own... but overall. I would recommend!
