Galatea
by Madeline Miller
surprisingly feminist omg???
i’ve never read any of her other stuff, but i thought this would be a good small little book to start.
it’s based off of pygmalion in that a man carves a beautiful woman from marble and she is brought to life and becomes his wife, but pygmalion is a very misogynistic story that fetishizes female purity and dependence upon men. madeline took that and looked at what that story would be from the woman’s lense: what it would be like to be married to a man that is disgusted by women’s autonomy, that desires women yet despised them, that fantasizes about abuse, control, and possession.
it truly is a horror story. soo so so beautifully written though. got a lot of good quotes from this one FOR SURE
