sarahscott917 's review for:
Zeroboxer
by Fonda Lee
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a review.
Although I'm not a fan of wrestling or any related sport, I did really enjoy this. A lot of the book covers Carr fighting as a zeroboxer, and Lee does a very good job describing the action in the zero gravity cube. She also built a very good lead character and good supporting characters in Carr's number one fan and his coach.
The world building is done well. Given all the advances that living in space would require, this must take place quite a way in the future. However, so much of it was familiar that it didn't feel so farfetched. It was a good look at the promotion that goes into the careers of modern athletes, elevating them to celebrity status, and also shows how much training and hard work go on behind the scenes.
There are a lot of big social issues here, but Lee only taps the surface. The book mostly covered the life of Carr and didn't delve much into the blatant discrimination common throughout the story. In my opinion, that would have improved the book and raised it up. As it is, it's a good read if a little fluffy.
