A strong start, with an interesting setup. Moved quickly at the beginning, and was fairly interesting, but ended up going nowhere, IMO. I never felt that any emotional connections were developed. The characters (especially Penny, whose sidestory added nothing but bulk to the book) felt like cardboard cutouts.
Generally clunky and repetitive prose. Had I not read that the author is known for fanfiction, I might've guessed, as the book felt like a kind of fanfiction, and could've certainly used a better editing pass to pick up on inconsistencies in the text as well as blatant plot holes.
