The Quillan Games by D.J. MacHale
5.0

Bobby has been invited to the Games on the territory of Quillan, and he barely gets a look at the city before he is abducted to the castle of the evil game-masters, Veego and LaBerge. The entire world places bets on their games, hoping for a better life, but losing can mean death. Bobby is forced into playing the games, finding unexpected allies within the castle and in the city. But if he competes in the deadly games, he might be playing right into Saint Dane's hands. Bobby has to make difficult choices without knowing all the facts of what is really going on in the territory, and Saint Dane is up to his manipulative tricks again.

Meanwhile back on Second Earth, Mark and Courtney are dealing with their own problems as Courtney recovers in the hospital and Mark's family is in danger. Even on Second Earth, there is no one they can trust, and Saint Dane has a definite influence on events to create chaos and attack Bobby's home.

Every one of the books in this series is so different! Just when I think I know what to expect, I'm thrown off track, and I never see it coming. The one constant is the excellent writing, the intriguing characters, and the amazing world-building.

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby.... I love that guy! He makes mistakes AGAIN. He fights and inspires and does the best he can with the situation that is presented to him. He's tough and vulnerable. He's deliciously human in every circumstance. I'm always rooting for him through every book. I love seeing him grow and learn and grieve and triumph.

I'm always amazed at the close relationship between Courtney and Mark. Those two are such unlikely friends, but it's incredible how they take care of each other, cheer each other on when things get touch, and how much they are invested in helping Bobby. And the best part is, although it's a weird friendship, it's very believable. The writing is so balanced, it makes me believe that this friendship is real and true and lasting.

Another masterpiece of a book! Brilliant from start to finish!
