The Flash Vol. 2: Speed of Darkness (Rebirth)
by Joshua Williamson
This was the first book I've read of Flash to make me like Wally (New52 Wally) but damn it, I did haha.
So Flash is still running around being Mr. Flashly Flash. Cheesy things like "That's A Flash Fact!" and all that. However the key plot point in here is training kid Flash (Wally New52) and getting him to learn about himself. Actually, I'd argue this is a bigger growth volume for Wally over Barry. We get to see New52 Wally meet Pre-52 Wally and kind of learn a bit more about how to be a sidekick. On top of that we get a adventure with Shade! Yeah, nobody cares about him but it brings some lessons and new powers for New52 Wally. last but not least we get a day where Barry is taking out Iris on a date and Wally handles the street side of things.
Good: I liked Wally! He's starting to really grow on me. I didn't like him at all in New52 run but here, him growing into his own unique character, is really nice. I still love Pre-new52 red head Wally the most (even more than Barry) but the character growth for Kid Flash is good. I also enjoyed that Barry and iris decided to try to work this relationship out (and my boy got laid! Woot woot)
Bad: The art is really inconstant. I also don't know if it's the same artist as volume 1, which I enjoyed, but this seems a bit more sloppy. I also didn't care for the middle storyline, the main one, because shade is kind of a boring character. Kind of felt slower paced and not good for a Flash story.
Overall not a horrible story but I liked volume 1 better. Kid Flash is growing on me but we can do a lot more with Barry. We must! However this is good for what it is. A 3 out of 5.
