In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
3.0

Objectively, this is well-written and I love how this is a memoir via poetry.  I also appreciate the space it creates for acknowledging and recounting same-sex domestic abuse. I absolutely see why it’s so beloved.

My subjective rating comes from my audiobook listening experience, which didn’t work for me. Sometimes when the author is the narrator it makes for an even more impactful story, and other times, it doesn’t. The delivery and tone of the narration was trying to make us feel a certain way, rather than giving us the space to come to that conclusion ourselves/interpret it in our own way. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I read it physically.
