Like the first in the series (Consider Phlebas) the protagonist is not a member of the culture but his story is closely linked to it. The structure of the book of 2 stories alternating each chapter with one moving forward in time and the other backwards ultimately meeting at the end was a really nice style. The ending is surprising and exciting, as always with culture books it's well worth a read.
