A Song Below Water
by Bethany C. Morrow
This book's premise was right up my alley-- magical powers, feminism, dismantling racism. The story started out strong, but slowly fizzled for me as the world building was a bit muddled. I am familiar with many mythical tropes and creatures, but this book did not explain well enough when the mythology was introduced and I felt confused at times. I was gripped by the story for about 2/3 of the novel, but the last 1/3 felt lacking and I felt myself losing interest as the book wrapped up. This book challenges and faces some important and fascinating ideas and I was into it for a while; the dissection of protesting and Black Lives Matter through the lens of fantasy and magic was a compelling approach, but overall it disappointed me in the end. If you care more about the relationships between characters than the world building, this might be more suited to you!
