My Lovely Wife
by Samantha Downing
This was a great thriller about a man and wife who enjoy murdering people together. I thought it was very well written and it was a fast read. When reading the novel I felt that more could have been expanded upon, the main characters felt a little one-sided and I would have loved to get more into the characters heads. This book is addictive. Each chapter is like eating a piece of candy, once reading one chapter you can’t stop reading this.
The wife kills the women that her husband lures back to her. To get the women, the husband pretends to be a deaf man. By day the wife is a realtor and her husband is a tennis coach. After their itch for killing has begun, they decide to resurrect Owen, who used to be the local killer from years ago, to take the blame of their killings. They research and start to fit the profile of their victims to fit that of Owen. They have two children who begin to believe that while their father was away luring the women that he was cheating on their mom. As the news begins to spread about Owen’s return it shows a family dealing with a child who is so afraid that she brings a knife to school and a son who believes his father is cheating on his mother and blackmails him. The whole thing is very twisted and disturbing but such an addicting read.
As far as a thriller I think this is pretty good. I think it could have been pushed more, all the murders were done off screen and because we never get into the head of Millicent, ‘the wife’ we don’t really know what happens to the victims. She really is the brains behind the entire operation and it would have added to the effect if we could see into her head. I think this author has the potential to be amazing. I think that if she had pushed the plot and characters more I would have given it 5 stars. This is one of those books that while reading you’re hooked but by the end of the year, you won’t remember what it’s even about.
