"The pain will never go away, Miles. Ever. But if you let yourself love her, you'll only feel it sometimes, instead of allowing it to consume your entire life."

Miles has a tragic past that he feels won't allow him (and he won't allow himself) to feel love again. Then he meets Tate. He feels that Tate can take away the pain for the times they are together, but he won't let her in or let her fall in love with him. He has rules in place to prevent it.

Though Tate is strong. She feels there is something worthwhile in Miles. I didn't always agree with her staying with him when he was dead set on it being "benefits only" but I'm glad that she was finally able to break down some barriers. I thought she really got to show Miles that he was worthy of love again.
