The House Across the Lake
by Riley Sager
I think its probably a 2.75 stars due to the first twist, that's supposed to distract you from the second one (the really bad one). I saw a lot of reviews calling this a parody like Kristen Bell tv show on Netflix and I feel that. Similar to that one because of the tone, and the way over the top ending that is never truly explained, it never materializes and feels rather messy. Plus our MC is mostly annoying for the better part of 75% of the novel.
A lot of the reveals stuck for me, but with the trope I hate still being in here. And the ending oddly similar to a recent Sager it could be better. Just like Survive the Night third acts are hard, and even though the craziness did make this book 10x more enjoyable it wasn't worth it in the end. Plus with this one doing something we all wanted in another but never thought Sager would do, it's almost disappointing because at least there it was better explained.
However, if you've never read a Riley Sager like with most of his other works this would be a fun one. I just wish it'd come out during the haze of The Girl on the Train. Oh, and the slight mentioning of female safety from the mind our MC and written by a male author was a little icky to me personally. Especially because Sager has never been practically good at writing female characters. I still think he should go full LGBT in his next title. But more than likely another female protagonist.
