The Year of Lear: Shakespeare in 1606
by James Shapiro
Based on the title of this book I assumed there would be a lot more about Shakespeare and how he came to write King Lear, and while the book does hinge around him, it takes far too many tangents. There were multiple chapters where Lear wasn't mentioned at all and that had me losing interest. That having been said, it was a very well written history of England at the time of Shakespeare's writing of the play.
