Hawkeye, Vol. 2: Little Hits by Annie Wu, Francesco Francavilla, Matt Fraction
4.5

Little Hits continued to be a fantastic volume in the Hawkeye series. The action slows down in this volume as we get to see more of the day-to-day mundanities of Clint's life like helping tenants during a flood and setting up his cable before Christmas. Clint also finds himself further embroiled with the sweatsuit mafia he confronted in volume one. As his romantic entanglements lead him down deeper waters than he was expecting.

The slice-of-life moments in this volume were as compelling as the action. Fraction's Hawkeye is about an Avenger off duty and the quieter moments allow for interesting character exploration. In Little Hits we see the blowback of Clint's flaws. We focus on his messy relationships with the women in his life and his consistent refusal to ask for help or be emotionally vulnerable. This makes him an occasionally infuriating but ultimately human and relatable protagonist to follow.

Like I mentioned in my review of My Life as a Weapon I wouldn't recommend this series to people who don't like non-chronological storytelling. The series constantly moves back and forth in time telling sequences of events out of order and recontextualizing moments retrospectively. This makes rereading the series rewarding because all of the initial confusion has been eliminated but I can see a newbie reader frustrated at the unconventional style

In Little Hits Matt Fraction continues to demonstrate a deftness in his storytelling and I always felt in safe hands as he took me along the ride.
