Monster in My Closet
by R.L. Naquin
I read a lot of Urban Fantasy. It's one of my favorite genres. I've read everything from Butcher's Dresden Files books to the (less than impressive) Southern Vampire Romance novels. So Monster in My Closet was right in my wheelhouse. What surprised and thrilled me was how flawed Zoey turned out to be as a character. I'm used to authors creating Mary-Sue heroins who can kick ass and who have their whole lives completely worked out. True, Zo certainly has a lot of men falling at her feet (well. Ok, three men. Does that count as a lot?) but it actually works considering that she's an Empath. People are naturally drawn to her yet that doesn't make her boring. Her desire to help people is both endearing and often the source of much of her conflict. She wants to help her ex husband, even though said ex husband is a lazy mooch unable to stand on his own two feet. Even though I personally want to slam the door in Brad's face, it's perfectly believable that Zo doesn't do it.
The world is interesting enough that I want to see moree. I'd like to know how the Hidden have stayed Hidden so long. Are Zo, Andrew and people like them cross breeds of the Hidden? What about Zo's mom and Zo's lack of memories surrounding her? There's enough still to discover to keep me coming back. Add to that a cast of characters who have lots of room to grow and this has the makings of a very fun read.
I will certainly be on the lookout for more in this series and I plan on reading the next book soon.
