An interesting and less well-known topic, I had high hopes for a fleshed-out description of life for immigrants entering the west coast of the United States. Unfortunately, it was a lot of brief quotes from primary sources and not much in-depth description. I know that Freedman has tackled difficult subjects before (Kids at Work) and was disappointed.
